BreakAway Yoga was founded by Jennifer Lucas with a simple but powerful vision: to create a space where people could come together through mindful movement, authentic connection, and community.

In August 2017, that vision became reality when BreakAway Yoga Studio opened in Parkville, Maryland as Baltimore County’s first “sweat and social sanctuary” — a place where people from all walks of life could sweat, connect, and feel supported in their practice.

From the beginning, BreakAway Yoga stood out for its distinctive approach. Classes emphasized breath awareness, self-trust, and tuning into your inner teacher — empowering students to listen to their bodies and honor what they truly needed on the mat. This philosophy quickly resonated with the community, leading to a loyal following and regional recognition, including Best Yoga Studio by The Baltimore Sun in 2019 and 2021.

The studio became known for its inclusive and dynamic programming — from Aerial Yoga and Yoga Sculpt to Yin, Restorative, Sound Healing, and the signature BreakAway Vinyasa Flow — offering a “city vibe” experience in the heart of Baltimore County.

Like many small businesses, BreakAway Yoga faced significant challenges during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. In the years that followed, Jennifer was met with ongoing issues related to the physical studio space, including unresolved damage and repeated disputes with property management. When it became clear that the situation no longer aligned with her values — or with the level of care she expected for her business and community — Jennifer made the intentional decision to step away from the physical location in December 2023.

Choosing to close the studio was not a step back — it was an act of self-respect and leadership. Jennifer advocated for herself and her business, refusing to accept conditions that compromised her integrity, well-being, or the experience she worked so hard to create. That decision reflects the same philosophy she teaches on the mat: listen closely, honor your limits, and take action when something no longer serves you.
